Illegal logging is a major international problem, which, unfortunately, occurs also within the European Union. As you rightly point out the Union`s main instruments against illegal logging is the EU Timber Regulation 995/2010 (EUTR) and the broader FLEGT Action Plan. We have to admit that you pose a legitimate question also very timely as the EU Timber Regulation is currently under evaluation, and the results will be published in the coming weeks. The objective of the evaluation is to look at the way the regulation has been applied in the first two years of its existence and to propose measures to improve its application and enforcement in the future.

The victory of the year!
The “Cosava Mica” virgin forest has been saved.

This victory belongs to AGENT GREEN community and shows that it is worth campaigning, the signing petition matter and that wining is possible.

It is the most beautiful winter holidays present that forest enthusiasts could get after so much effort.

733 hectares of unspoiled forest made by Mother Nature after the last ice age has been declared virgin (T1 category) in the latest forest management plan for the next 10 years. In this 10 years break Agent Green will keep campaigning to include Cosava Mica in Semenic National Park and in UNESCO World Natural Heritage.
Agent Green received scientific support from The National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry. The nature book writer, photographer and environmentalist Matthias Schickhofer also supported the “Save Cosava” campaign internationally. The high altitude climbers Alex Gavan and Zsolt Torok have also actively supported this campaign.

Santa has brought to us all a great present according to our efforts.

This means that the millions of LIKE, SHARE, COMMENTS and SIGNED PETITIONS are bringing proper yields.

Cosava Mica virgin forest has become this week part of European Network of protected areas Natura 2000. The site has been designated for its outstanding ancient beech forests measuring 733,5 hectares (almost the size of 1500 soccer stadiums).

At the beginning of December AGENT GREEN was proudly announcing that Cosava Mica has been recognized and protected for the next 10 years as its new management plan indicates it is a T.I. type which means no human intervention is allowed.

The next steps in our campaign are:
- Make Cosava Mica a National Park
- Get Cosava Mica in UNESCO World Heritage

Schweighofer is Romania’s biggest producer of softwood, processing around 40% of the country’s annual production. Romania’s vast and largely intact forests, which are home to bison, lynx and bears, have lost 280,000 hectares of forest during the last decade, according to satellite analyses, much of it to illegal logging.

"When Sasha came to Romania, I told him, 'Look, Schweighofer incentivizes the illegal harvesting of wood all over the country. They have outrageous prices and they encourage the poor to cut down everything they can get their hands on and bring it to them. Schweighofer doesn't cut trees. They just buy the wood and then pretend, 'I don't know anything, it's none of my business who really cut it, where, or how. My paperwork is in perfect order. That's how they cover their tracks. That's the gist of it."

If you were playing a game of “guess the forest,” a clue of thousands of hectares of old-growth forest home to large predators including bears and wolves, might not necessarily mean your first guess would be anywhere in Europe. A second clue of an average of 62 reported cases of illegal logging per day and an average of three hectares of woodland lost every hour would perhaps be more indicative of a tropical wood-producing nation.

Wien, Mittwoch, 2.
