When one thinks of the natural wonders of Europe, Romania does not necessarily spring to mind as a country home to some of the largest areas of forests of outstanding universal value. However, hosting at least 500,000 hectares of potential primary and old-growth forests (Schickhofer and Schwarz 2019), Romania is easily home to the lion’s share of intact forests in the European Union outside of Scandinavia. Few would appreciate that Romania is home to some of the largest and healthiest populations of large carnivores – bears, wolves and lynx – in all of Europe. However, these ancient forests are being logged before the eyes of the European Union (EU), even at a time when the European Commission has communicated its intent to step up action to protect and restore the world’s forests. Logging, both legal and illegal, is occurring in Natura 2000 sites, national parks and in the buffer zones of UNESCO World Heritage areas, immediately adjacent to the core inscribed properties. The impacts on the integrity of the World Heritage property are undeniable.

Il a cherché les meilleurs travailleurs à Maramureș, la province à la frontière ukrainienne, à six cents kilomètres de là.

On the way to a fancy pants conference on forests and climate at the European Commission, a bunch of activists get soaked in the Brussels pouring rain. A massive 50 meter banner reads “Save European Primary Forests!”. This sums up the conference.

Frans Timmermans presented himself as the tree-hugger in chief of the EU. “Tackling the climate crisis is not about saving the planet, it’s about saving the humanity. The planet can survive us – it’ll simply get rid of us.”

The NGOs calls for a turn of the EU-politics regarding primary and natural forests. The environmental NGO criticises that the European Commission´s strategy on forests held out in prospect in the “Green Deal” focuses too much on economic objectives instead of the resolute protection of primary and natural forests.

Although the strategy on forests contains relevant aspects, like the afforestation of destroyed and degraded forests in Europe, all the proposed measures centre around the economic valorisation of wood. The demand for wood is immense, but the major part of it is not transformed into durable products, but ends up as paper or pressed wood furniture or is increasingly burnt in the form of pellets and firewood."

Több napos ellenőrzés zajlott Kovászna megyében az erdészeti kihágások és bűncselekmények megelőzése érdekében. A rendőrök az erdészeti felügyelőség szakembereivel egy háromszéki feldolgozónál a teljes értékesítési láncot vizsgálták, a beszerzéstől a tároláson, feldolgozáson át az eladásig.

 Százezer köbméternyi fát loptak el az elmúlt 8 évben Máramarossziget közelében
Costel Alexe ügyvezető környezetvédelmi miniszter azt nyilatkozta szerdán egy sajtótájékoztatón, hogy vasárnap Máramaros megyébe látogatott, ahol olyan mértékű illegális fakitermelést fedezett fel, amilyenre az elmúlt 5 évben nem volt példa Romániában.

Élőlánccal tiltakoztak a Vaskapu-Resicabánya magasfeszültségű vezeték miatt tervezett erdőirtás ellen
Táblákkal felszerelkezve alkottak élőláncot az Agent Green Egyesület aktivistái a buldózerek előtt annak érdekében, hogy megakadályozzák a tervezett erdőirtást. Az állami tulajdonban levő Transelectrica ugyanis 14 természetvédelmi területet átvágva állítaná fel a huzalokat. Ez közel 150 hektárnyi erdő, jórészt érintetlen erdő kivágását jelentené a vezeték nyomvonalán, kb. 50 méter szélességben, főként a Cserna és a Néra patakok völgyében illetve ezek környékén. A tiltakozó akciót Herkulesfürdő közelében szervezték, itt van ugyanis az építő cég telephelye.

Aktivist*innen der Umweltorganisationen ROBIN WOOD und Agent Green protestieren seit heute früh gegen Kahlschläge im rumänischen Urwald zum Bau einer Hochspannungsleitung. Die Aktion findet im Iardaștița-Urwald im Südwesten Rumäniens statt, wo der mehrheitlich staatseigene Energiekonzern Transelectrica die Stromtrasse LEA ("linie electrică aeriană", oberirdische Stromleitung) errichten will. Sie soll vom südlichen Portile de Fier über Resita einmal über die Karpaten bis ins nördliche Arad führen.

En Roumanie, le Don Quichotte de la forêt lutte contre l’abattage illégal
Les forêts roumaines, qui comptent parmi les plus vastes et les plus anciennes d’Europe, sont gravement menacées par l’exploitation illégale massive. Tiberiu Bosutar, un villageois du nord du pays, lutte sans relâche en traquant les mafieux du bois. Un article d’Euroefe.
Il y a quatre ans, Tiberiu Bosutar, qui habite près du village de Moldovita situé dans l’extrême nord de la Roumanie, a décidé de ne plus attendre des réponses des autorités et a pris des mesures contre les mafias qui exploitent illégalement le bois dans son pays.

Romsilva verwüstet weiter geschützte Wälder
Trotz des bereits gestarteten Vertragsverletzungsverfahrens der EU-Kommission gegen Rumänien wegen Holzeinschlag in geschützten, ja sogar in als UNESCO-Erbe eingestuften Ur- und Quasi-Urwäldern, geht der verantwortungslose Umgang der staatlichen Forstbehörde RA Romsilva SA mit Holzeinschlag dort, wo es alle Gesetze verbieten, weiter. Augenblicklich läuft eine solche Holzeinschlagaktion im Nationalpark Domogled-Cernatal, bergauf und westlich von Herkulesbad/Băile Herculane. Und die Umweltschützer von Agent Green, allen voran ihr Vorsitzender Gabriel Păun, versuchen, den Umweltfrevel buchstäblich mit bloßen Händen – aber auch mit Unterstützung der Medien und mit Hilferufen Richtung Brüssel – zu stoppen.
